Install Espanso on Fedora Silverblue
Topics: Fedora Silverblue
Espanso is a text expander utility. For Fedora Silverblue and related distributions such as Bluefin, it has to be built manually.
Build environment
To avoid having to overlay all kinds of build dependencies, I used Distrobox as my build environment, choosing the same Fedora version as my host OS.
Inside the Distrobox, I installed the dependencies following the official instructions.
Build
At the time I did this, the build command in the docs was outdated. I used this instead:
cargo build --release --no-default-features --features wayland,modulo,vendored-tls
Installation
Back on my host shell, I copied the built binary to /usr/local/bin and added the special permissions as documented.
A few dependencies still have to be installed as overlays:
rpm-ostree install wl-clipboard wxGTK
After a reboot, I registered and enabled the Espanso service. This didn’t work at first. Every espanso command immediately quit without any error message. Removing an apparently outdated configuration in ~/.config/espanso fixed the issue.
